When we’re referring to old child discipline, we are talking about disciplining children who are no longer toddlers and are old enough to understand what they have done. There are some tips and tricks to dealing with older children that you need to remember.

First, do not immediately overreact until you are able to hear your child’s side of the story. Often, older children are able to explain why they did something even though it might not be enough to get them out of trouble.

Secondly, never use physical discipline such as spanking or hitting. Using force as an adult is never a good option. It only scars the child emotionally and makes them distrust you. Would you confide something important to someone who might hit you?

Third, involve the child in the process of disciplining. Ask them what they think they did wrong and how they could have done better. Ask them what they think the consequences of their actions should be. Of course, you are the parent and make the final determination.

Fourth, make sure that the punishment fits the crime. If you overreact to every little thing that a child does wrong, they will have a hard time understanding what is truly wrong and what is just you being overly dramatic. If you freak out over the least little things, they will not know when something is really a big deal.

Finally, choose your battles wisely. Give children some room to be themselves. Not everyone is going to act alike or perfectly all the time. Therefore, you must choose which battles are really worth fighting.

Old child discipline does not have to be hard if you follow these guidelines. Remember that simply taking something away for awhile that the child loves works wonders many times, and it is certainly better than screaming at the kid.
